"The Lost Tombs of Notre-Dame" is a deep dive into an exceptional scientific and archaeological adventure that promises to throw fresh light on the history of Notre-Dame. The documentary will take viewers inside the riveting forensic mystery – buried for centuries underneath the Notre-Dame cathedral. After the devastating 2019 fire at Notre Dame, two mysterious sarcophaguses were discovered under the cathedral's stone floor. They had been hidden for centuries, now an extraordinary archaeological dig revealed those unexpected treasures: two lead sarcophaguses, and over a thousand polychrome sculpted blocks, along with the remains of the medieval rood screen. It separated the choir from the nave, and once thought lost forever as it was destroyed in the 18th century. An exceptional archaeological find! One sarcophagus belonged to a known figure, and the other was shrouded in mystery. Who were they, what secrets will these coffins reveal and what do these ancient burials tell us about Notre Dame's past? These discoveries turned out to be so exceptional that the excavation work was extended several times, despite the urgent need to restore the monument. A fascinating historical and scientific investigation during which many experts (archaeologists, anthropologists, forensic scientists, art historians, restorers…) will attempt to decipher the secrets of these relics. Using cutting-edge technology, they will throw fresh light on the history of Notre-Dame. Written & Directed by Florence Tran ; ZED, Inrap & CNRS Images Production for ARTE France, TV5 Quebec-Canada, Planete+, Ceska Televize, Foxtel, RTBF, Mediaset and PBS NOVA/GBH
